The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Umara Zulum has busted water vendors for illegally tapping public water for commercial purposes.

The vendors allegedly constructed specialized water dams, manipulating the public water distribution network and selling it to the people.

The Governor who paid an unscheduled visit to communities in Jere and Maiduguri in the state capital on Thursday discovered the illegal structures.

The statement by Abdurrahman Ahmed Bundi, the governor's media aide said, "Certain vendors have constructed specialised water dams blocking and diverting water flow in order to create artificial shortage."

He explained that the vendors who created the artificial shortage of water inflated prices and maximized their profits while other residents suffered.

Governor Zulum said: “It is unfortunate to notice that while the government spend millions to provide water to the people, few individuals have constructed specialised dams, most with multiple layers of reservoirs. Some of them can store more than one million litres of water.

“Every day, our treatment plants process and distribute about 40 million litres of water; these criminals trap the larger amount of those supplies for commercial gain.

"It is unacceptable that some individuals would exploit the suffering of our people for their own selfish gains. We will not tolerate such criminal activities that jeopardize the lives of our citizens.”
