Zulum commissions ICAN regional office in Maiduguri

The Governor of Borno State, Babagana Umara Zulum has commissioned the regional office of the Institute of Chattered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) in Maiduguri, the State's capital.

Represented by his Deputy, Umar Usman Kadafur on Saturday at the ceremony, Zulum expressed his excitement, noting that the office would address the challenge of traveling to Lagos to enjoy the institute's services.

He said: "It is indeed a great development and a positive change in our concerted effort to provide the enabling ambience for members of the institute to meet, network and share professional ideas and ensure that no section or part of the society and members are deprived of the services of the institute, with regards to distance to the ICAN National Headquarters in Lagos.

"Borno State Government is willing to welcome innovative idea and suggestion which will bring turnaround to the country as well as constructive criticism that will engender good governance, financial prudence and accountability especially in Borno state."

He added that for a nation going through the process of transformation, there was need to ensure the maintenance of ethical standard of the accounting profession. 

He said: "We should ensure that the ethical standard of this noble profession are maintained at all times, as well as loyalty, transparency and good corporate governance.

"By virtue of your profession as accountants and members of this reputable institute, you owe it to your selves and the numerous organizations where you work for to ensure that proper books of accounts are kept up to date."

He equally urged them to maintain the role of accountants and the chartered accounting policy for good governance. 

Shuaibu Baba Adamu, the Deputy Governor's spokesperson made this known in a statement on Saturday.

According to Adamu, the governor noted the need to fix the professional ethics of accountants for proper management and service to the public.

The governor stated further that: "It is therefore obvious that in view of the significant role that you play as accountants in the society, there is the growing need to beam our searching on getting things done in a strictly professional manner."

He further felicitated with the members of the Institute for the completion of the regional office project.

On his part, (Dr) Innocent Okwuosa, the President of ICAN commended the state government for allocating the land for the office construction among other interventions.
