Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum has disbursed the sum of N201 million to 2010 indigent nursing and midwifery students as allowance.

The Governor approved the disbursement of the allowance on Wednesday while commissioning two projects at the College of Nursing and Midwifery in Maiduguri, the state capital.

Commissioning the two projects, namely a lecture theatre complex and a 3,000-people-capacity multipurpose hall, the governor explained that the allowances were for students who have not benefitted from the state government scholarship.

Allnews.ng recalls that the governor earlier approved N1.3 billion in scholarships to 997 indigent students of the college, targeting those who passed an entrance examination for the scholarship.

The governor directed that each of the 2,010 beneficiaries be credited with the bursary allowance of N100,000.

In reaction to the governor's gesture, the Nursing Council of Nigeria (NCN) commended Governor Zulum for his commitment to improving nursing practice in the state.

The Registrar of the Council, (Dr) Farouk Umar Abubakar who was represented by the Director of Standard and Accreditation, Alhassan Ndagi said "The scholarship awarded by the governor is the first of its kind and so far the largest in Nigeria."

As contained in a statement by Abdurrahman Ahmed Bundi, Governor Zulum's spokesperson, the registrar applauded the performance of the nursing students from Borno, stating that "every year at the national examinations, students from Borno score more than 90 per cent."
