The rocket carrying the historic "Start Me Up" mission's first window planned to be launched on Monday, January 9, 2023, from British soil failed to reach orbit and was destroyed, ending a historic space mission that began in Cornwall.
A modified Boeing 747 named Cosmic Girl launched on Monday night, to the whoops and applause of a crowd that had gathered at Spaceport Cornwall to watch the launch.
Off the southern coast of Ireland, it successfully launched a rocket dubbed LauncherOne with a payload of nine satellites.
But soon after, Virgin Orbit, the mission's lead organisation, declared there had been "an anomaly" and the rocket had been unable to go to the necessary altitude.
