Sergio Asenjo joined the Real Valladolid youth set up when he was just 15 years old. He progressed through the ‘pucelana’ (Valladolid) academy and made his debut in the First Division in the 2007/08 season, against Villarreal as a matter of fact, having just turned 18. He became one of the great revelations of the season for the purple-and-whites and one of the most desired players by other league clubs.

In the summer of 2009, the goalkeeper joined Atlético Madrid and, after playing just 15 games, suffered a serious knee injury in May 2010 that kept him off the pitch until November that same year. In the 2010 winter transfer window, Asenjo went on loan to Málaga CF. Despite fitting in well, he suffered another serious injury in February 2011. In the 2011/12 campaign, he returned to Atlético Madrid, where he stayed until the summer of 2013, then Villarreal signed him on a season-long loan with the option to buy him. And the club did just that. In his first season as a Yellow, 2013/14, he started in 35 matches and the Submarine wanted Asenjo for keeps. With outstanding agility and reflexes, Sergio Asenjo brings great security to the team between the posts and is very reliable in one-on-one situations.
