How To Activate Instagram Dark Mode

The Instagram dark mode appears nice and it's easy to use, presenting a different colour scheme that replaces Instagram's traditional white interface with shades of grey and black.

The Instagram dark mode is also easy on your phone battery life. White pixels draw a lot more extra energy than black ones. This is especially true of smartphones with Active Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (AMOLED) screens.

The dark mode also helps to prevent Photophobia (light sensitivity) an intolerance of light that may hurt the eyes.

Apple’s cool black theme has been on for a while, but Dark Mode has finally arrived on Instagram.

Anyone running iOS 13 or Android 10 will be able to make the move to the dark side, as long as they’re running the latest version of Instagram.

The rollout of this new Instagram feature was revealed by CEO Adam Mosseri via Twitter. Though Mosseri only mentions support for iOS 13 and Android 10 devices, the feature reportedly works on Android 9 devices as well. This is because the OS version natively supports system-wide dark mode.
