History of Ikono

Ikono Local Government Area situated in the South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria. It is located in Akwa Ibom State. Ikono is bounded by Ini Local Government Area to the North, Abak and Uyo Local Government Areas to the South, Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area to the East, and Ikot Ekpene, Essien Udim, and Obot Akara Local Government Areas to the West.

Ikono has a landmass of approximately 407.16 square kilometres (157.21 sq mi). It is considered one of the four largest Local Government Areas in Akwa Ibom. Ikono Local Government Area was created as a standalone local government in September 1996.

The estimated population of Ikono LGA is reported to be 93,793 inhabitants. The majority of the population in Ikono belongs to the Ibibio ethnic group. Some popular sub-groups within Ikono include Ukpom, Nung Ukim, and Ediene.

Several towns and villages make up Ikono Local Government Area, including Ibakesi, Ikot Ubeng, Odoro Ikpe, Uquok, Ibiaku, Asanting, Mbiafun, and Mbia Obong. The Ibibio language is extensively spoken in Ikono LGA.
