The Minister of and Employment, Chris Ngige, blames the current state of unemployment among the youth population of Nigeria on the economic recession of 2008.
He, however, stated that the government initiative N-power has recorded some success but is yet to reach its aim of reducing the level of unemployment in the country.
The minister said this at the sixth edition of the Africa Social Partners summit by the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA).

He said, “So, we have used this (N-power scheme) and drastically reduced youth we have not gotten to our target because most African government, Nigeria inclusive, we have some bad effects of the recession that started since 2008.
“That recession may have cleared (sic) in Europe and other climes, but in Africa, the effect of the recession still abound (sic).
“Nigeria is a country that is dependent on oil revenue. It is of late that the government of Muhammadu Buhari started a diversification by which we now have other things to export.”
