As the general elections draw near, with students making up a large number of the Nigerian youths who are expected to vote for their preferred candidates, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Professor Wahab Egbewole, has announced that academic activities will not be stopped at the institution during the election period.

Egbewole, however, explained that the university had scheduled a programme “where students can attend virtual classes and vote wherever they are.”

He maintained that lecturing would not be suspended for voting because “Unilorin is digitised,” he said.

Egbewole disclosed this while responding to questions from journalists during his maiden media parley on Wednesday.

According to the VC, the management of the university had prepared the academic timetables such that the educational agenda lost to the eight-month strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is regained by October with a new session commencing in August 2023.

On his achievement after 10 days in office, Egbewole said the university had under his administration received a N500 million TETFund grant for hostel accommodation for its students; N400 million for broadband from the Ministry of Communication; and a N200 million grant for ICT.

He added that some members of the institution's staff have also attracted a N100 million grant through their research works for the university, adding that UNILORIN “has patented 18- 20 products of its research works.”

The VC disclosed that plans were being made by his administration to complete the long-initiated Tanke–UNILORIN rail transportation system to ease the transport crisis encountered by students.

He added that the university is in talks with engaging the Embassy of China to oversee the project which was initiated 10-15 years ago.

Egbewole also revealed that the university was considering an “electric bus transportation system at the micro level” to ease transportation problems.
