2023: Inside Nigeria's Politics Of Endorsement

How bad could Nigerian politics get? It has grown into craving celebrity endorsements from divided and disunited groups. Should these groups anointing candidates do so in the first place? How did they attain the status?

Earlier, we established in our previous pieces how candidate endorsements have grown to be a mere register of advertisement and popularity stunts which do not always determine the outcomes of elections in the country.

This time, it is important to consider why these endorsements hardly pull weights.

Intra-organisational politics

Afenifere was trying to clear its mess or cover up the politics of superiority starched with the sociocultural group.

The more the group tried hard to convince Nigerians, the more apparent its division to the public.

Intra-organisational politics has weakened the collective authority of most of these endorsers. That is why a leader would say we have endorsed Candidate A, and another will appear on national TV to debunk the endorsement.

If these groups operate on the same front with similar goals, their endorsement will impact the political space.

Their people don't feel their impact

Most of these groups are not as functional as their names suggest. They do not have the effrontery to influence the people's beliefs, thoughts, or votes.

In Nigeria, people only listen to groups that respond to them in times of need, not those that issue press releases and organise media parleys without following them up with humanitarian actions.

Instead of showing sympathy, if these groups had always remained empathetic with their people and had direct contact with them, they would have been able to dictate political and electoral shows in the country.

Some elites who do not join most of these sociocultural groups tell our correspondents that most organisations are closer to the political office holders than the people they wish to protect.

Their impacts are seasonal

How scarce could rain be in dry seasons? These sociocultural groups hardly make national contributions except during electioneering periods or when they are gripping power tussles.

If these interest groups are visibly seen among the generality of potential voters often, their advice on the best political candidates will resonate with their subjects.

Leadership crisis

If you want to clothe me, I should check your body first.

In the last five years, there have been records of leadership crises and factional followership in Nigeria's five most prominent sociocultural groups.

How will an organisation struggling with leadership voodoo prescribe the best political officeholders when their houses are not in order?

Nigerians would instead follow their minds, hearts or pockets than follow them.
