Chairman of Senate Services in the National Assembly, Senator Sunday Karimi, has disclosed that suspended Senator Abdul Ningi failed to present any report to the Senate regarding his claim of N3.7 trillion budget padding in the 2024 budget.

Ningi, who previously chaired the Northern Senators’ Forum before stepping down, alleged that the presidency was operating with a different budget from the one approved by lawmakers, sparking controversy within the Senate and resulting in Ningi's three-month suspension.

Senator Karimi, a member of the Northern Senators’ Forum, revealed in an exclusive interview with NIGERIAN TRIBUNE that only Senators Ningi and Kawu Sumaila were aware of the details surrounding the claim.

Explaining the origins of the controversy, Senator Karimi stated, "It began during the supplementary budget of 2023 when there were rumours of unequal resource allocation to the Northern region. Despite numerous meetings and media reports, no concrete evidence was presented. This claim resurfaced during the 2024 appropriations process, with allegations of unfair treatment towards Northern states."

He continued, "During a meeting attended by 11 members of the forum, a report was presented alleging a discrepancy of N3.7 trillion between the passed budget and its implementation. Despite requests for evidence to support this claim, no satisfactory report was provided."

Senator Karimi expressed concern over the lack of transparency in the allegations, stating, "The Senate President convened a meeting to address these allegations, during which it became clear that the claims were based on incomplete information. The chairman of the Committee on Appropriations explained that the figures provided to consultants were only partial, leading to erroneous conclusions."

He emphasised the importance of accurate reporting in safeguarding the credibility of the nation and criticized Ningi and Sumaila for perpetuating baseless allegations even after being proven wrong.

In conclusion, Senator Karimi highlighted the need for accountability and thoroughness in handling budgetary matters to prevent misinformation and uphold the integrity of the legislative process.
