Eboyin-based Chikodili Igboji has been remanded at a correctional facility by an Abakaliki Chief Magistrate Court following the alleged rape of a 50-year-old widow, Chinyere Igwe.
The remand order was given on Wednesday after Chinedu Agama-Agama declined the defendant's request for bail.
The court charged 29-year-old Igboji with one count of sexual assault, which he allegedly committed on October 5 at Udenyi village, Izzo Imoha, in the Ezza North local government area of Ebonyi.
Following reading his offence, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge. His attorney Francis Nwelom, also stressed Igboji's innocence in his bail application.
Prosecution attorney Insp. Stanley Ngene, however, opposed the bail request and asked that the defendant be put behind bars.
According to Ngene, Igboji's crime is punishable by section 358 of the 2009 Ebonyi State of Nigeria’s CAP 33 vol. 1 statutes, criminal code.
Speaking to newsmen after the court session, the widow said the defendant had entered her home with a knife while she was asleep.
The mother of six added that Igboji had woken her up from sleep, seized her, and threatened to kill her if she made a sound.
“I was afraid and started shivering. I managed to ask him, what was my offence? I pleaded with him to have mercy on me that I have no husband and I have six children. Please.
”He pushed me, raped me and went away with my phone and my hard-earned N20,000," Igwe narrated.
