The National Assembly Mosque Zone E of the Apo Legislators’ Quarters in Abuja has finally sacked Imam Nuru Khalid over an alleged 'anti-government' sermon.

The Imam was suspended earlier over his Friday sermon suggesting to Nigerians not to vote in the coming 2023 elections if the government has not settled the security challenges in the country.

Imam Nuru Khalid had said, “Nigerian masses should resort to only one term which is – protect our lives, we will come out to vote; let us be killed, we will not come out to vote, since it’s only elections that you people know."

The mosque committee however suspended him after the Friday sermon.

The Imam had become a topic of discussion on social media over his comments calling on the government to do the right thing in securing the country.

Chairman of the mosque committee, Senator Saidu Muhammed Dansadau had told BBC that he had called the Imam on seven occasions to refrain from his utterances but he refused.

Dansadau further accused the Imam of inciting the public.

Meanwhile, in a separate interview, Imam Nuru Khalid had also told BBC that he was not given a fair hearing.

He added that he would not be silenced so long as the government does not exercise its constitutional duties of protecting the people.

The mosque committee in a letter dated April 4, 2022 relieved the suspended Imam of his duties as the Imam of the mosque.

The letter reads partly, “We regret to inform you that from today the 4th day of April 2022 you have been disengaged from the services of the above-mentioned mosque.

"This action is occasioned by the non-remorseful attitude you exhibited following your suspension on 2nd April this year.”
