Nigerian human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has reacted to an old video resurfacing of Burna Boy walking out on his mother and grandfather during an interview, following his recent comments about the lack of substance in Afrobeats music.
The video came to light after Burna Boy’s statement that 90% of Afrobeats artistes lack real-life experiences, resulting in a lack of substance in their music.
The statement prompted social media users to uncover an older interview clip in which the ‘Last Last’ crooner left an ongoing interview involving his mother, Bose Ogulu, and his esteemed grandfather, Benson Idonije, who managed the late Fela.
In the video snippet, Burna Boy’s grandfather discussed the motivations of musicians, highlighting that some aim solely to make money while others approach their craft from a spiritual perspective.
Burna Boy, however, seemed disinterested in the conversation, declaring the interview ‘boring’ and abruptly leaving the session.
Reacting to the rediscovered video, Aisha Yesufu pointed out that if the singer could exhibit such disrespect to his family, he would do the same to others.
She voiced her surprise at the public’s astonishment over Burna Boy’s recent comments about Afrobeats.
“Am I the only one that watched Burna Boy’s interview where he literally denigrated and relegated his grandfather? His mother was shell shocked sef.
“Then who the heck are you folks that he will not shred everyone of you?
“All of us like this he will pieces us! I am surprised at you people’s surprise,” she tweeted.
