Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune promised to introduce a youth unemployment benefit as a way to curb the rising rate of youth unemployment in the country.

The president made this statement when he addressed the nation in a live broadcast on Tuesday, focusing more on how to arrest rising unemployment, which stands at 15 percent of the total workforce.

"The payments will be made to preserve the dignity of young people," he said.

The breakdown of the payment

  1. A monthly grant of 13,000 dinars, which is around $100/NGN57,200, will enable them to take care of their immediate basic needs. A decision aimed at alleviating the economic crisis
  1. The allowance, which is equivalent to nearly two-thirds of the minimum wage of 20,000 dinars, which is around $142/NGN81,224, will begin in March.
  1. It will be accompanied by medical benefits, while some taxes on consumer products will also be suspended.

According to the president, a significant portion of the revenue from gas exports will be used to accomplish this.

He said the youth payments were part of the 2022 budget.

According to Arabnews.com, lawmakers sometime in November voted to scrap generous state subsidies on basic goods that had long helped maintain social peace, but that had strained state budgets as energy revenues fell.

Hopefully, the Nigerian government can take a clue from this.
