ASUU: Lawmakers To Intervene As NLC Threatens Three-Day Strike

Lawmakers of the House of Representatives have decided to intervene in the impasse between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government.

The decision was made known by Muhammad Wudil, Chairman, House Committee on Labour, when the House received members of the Nigeria Labour Congress and affiliate trade unions on Wednesday in Abuja.

The unions have been on a solidarity protest over the prolonged strike by ASUU and other tertiary institution-based unions since Tuesday.

Speaking to the protesters, Wudil claimed that the House had been in talks with relevant stakeholders since the unions embarked on industrial action, assuring that the stakeholders will be invited by the National Assembly with a view to resolving the impasse.

The Chairman, presenting the report of the meeting at the plenary, said the meeting with the congress was rewarding, noting that NLC made a seven-point demand.

Ayuba Wabba, the NLC Chairman had earlier led members of the congress and affiliate unions to the National Assembly in support of striking ASUU members. 

The NLC chairman stated that Nigerian University lecturers were the least paid in Africa.

Wabba threatened that the union would embark on a three-day protest and this time, coupled with strike action by its members if the two-day protest yielded nothing
