Fresh drama looms between the recently resumed Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government over the payment of half salary to members of the union.

Both individual members and chapters of ASUU have reacted following the payment of university workers under the union for 18 working days in October after it suspended its strike halfway into the month.

The UNILAG chapter of the union in a post on its Twitter page described the move by the government as “insensitive and disheartening”.

Dele Ashiru, the UNILAG chapter Chairperson, in the Twitter post wrote: "It is, to say the least, insensitive and disheartening that a supposedly democratic government can be so vicious, reckless and inhuman in dealing with the best brains in our society.

“The leadership of the union at the national level has been duly informed about this unfortunate development and they are on top of the issue.

"Members are please enjoined to remain calm and await further directives from the National Secretariat even in the face of this bracing provocation and crass wickedness by this administration.

"Please remain strong and undaunted because, a people united, can never be defeated."

The Usmanu Danfodiyo University, (UDU), Sokoto chapter of ASUU also accused the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige of trying to create conflict among members of the union in the institution.

Biased payment of salary is suspected at the institution as some lecturers in the College of Public Health and Medicine reportedly received their owed salaries.

Ngige had said workers who did not participate in the strike by the national body would be paid their outstanding salaries.

ASUU's national President, Emmanuel Osodeke disclosed that an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting would be summoned to discuss the development.

Members of the union resumed work on October 14 after the union called off its eight-month strike.
