Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas has clarified an earlier tweet that he is 'gay' on Twitter saying that his account was hacked and apologized to the LGBT community.
In the early hours of Sunday, the former Spain and Porto goalkeeper made the announcement on Twitter to his 10M followers on Sunday afternoon.
The tweet was in Spain but translated to read: "I hope you respect me, I'm gay. #HappySunday"
Casillas deleted the tweet about being gay but not after the media speculated that he was being 'ironic' about his sexuality in order to deny rumors linking him to the actress Alejandra Onieva.
Before Casillas could delete the tweet, former Spain teammate and Barcelona defender Carles Puyol commented on the tweet, he tweeted, "it's time to tell our story, Iker with a love emoji".
After several hours, Casillas deleted the tweet and explained the reason behind the initial statement, he tweeted: "Hacked account. Luckily everything was in order. Apologies to all my followers. And of course, more apologies to the LGBT community.?
Casillas is considered a legend of Spanish football after being capped 167 for his country and making over 700 appearances for Real Madrid.
If the statement were true, Casillas would not be the first player to come out with Blackpool's Jake Daniels the UK's first male professional footballer to come out publicly as gay since Justin Fashanu in 1990.
