Frank Geng-Quangrong, 47, a Chinese national, was sentenced to death by hanging by a Kano High Court on Tuesday for fatally stabbing his 22-year-old lover Ummukulsum Sani, a Nigerian.

Frank, a resident of Kano's Railway Quarters, was found guilty on one count of culpable murder.

Judge Sanusi Ado-Ma'aji rendered a decision, concluding that the prosecution had established its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

“The defendant’s testimony is inconsistent. I hereby find him guilty. I hereby recommend mercy by the Kano State Governor on behalf of the convict,” he ruled.

The defendant committed the crime on September 16, 2022, in Janbulo Quarters in Kano, according to information provided to the court earlier by the prosecution's attorney, Haruna Dederi, the state's attorney general.

He said that for an unspecified cause, the prisoner attacked the dead with a knife in her Janbulo Quarters Kano home on the same day at around nine o'clock at night.

“The victim was rushed to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital Kano where she was confirmed dead by a medical doctor,” he said. To the charge, the defendant entered a not-guilty plea.

To bolster their case against the defendant, the prosecution produced four exhibits and six witnesses. The prosecution stated that the offence violates Penal Code Section 221(b).

Muhummad Dan'azumi, the defence attorney, called the defendant to the stand, introduced five exhibits, and one more witness.

Dan'azumi pleaded with the court to use Section 313 of the ACJL to grant the defendant a prerogative of pity.

In his testimony, Frank said, “I didn’t kill Ummulkhulsum intentionally but stabbed her in self-defence after she grabbed my testes”.

He begged the court to balance its ruling between justice and charity.

Hajiya Fatima Zubairu, the mother of the victim, expressed her delight with the judge's decision in an interview with NAN immediately after the verdict.
