Coronavirus: South Africa Records 1,000 Cases, 2 Deaths

The South African Government reported the country's firtst 2 deaths from the coronavirus pandemic on Friday, with the number of infections rising to 1,000.

South Africa's Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize, said, “This morning we wake South Africans up with sad news that we now have our first deaths resulting from COVID-19.”

The minister announced that the deceased died in the Western Cape province, with the government ordering a 21-day lockdown. 

Zweli said that more information will be shared once  “when we announce the latest confirmed COVID-19 cases, which have increased from yesterday’s number and have tipped the 1,000 mark”.

South Africa's infection rates surged by 30 percent on Friday, bringing the number to 927 cases.

Over 57 million South Africans will be staying at home, as directed by the government of the country, in its bid to curb the spread of the virus.
