Coronavirus: Thousands Of Church Members In S.Korea To Be Quarantined

A protestant church in South Korea recognised as a hotspot for the novel coronavirus will have thousands of its members quarantined, according to South Korean authorities on Monday.

South Korea's approach to the stemming of the spread of the virus has been lauded by the international community, especially the trace, test, and treatment technique.

Seoul and the Gyeonggi province placed a ban on all religious gatherings, directing residents to avoid nonessential travelling.

On Monday 197 new cases of coronavirus were reported In South Korea, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 15,515.

The Asian country's concentrated area of infection is the Sarang Jeil Church spearheaded by a controversial pastor, Jun Kwang-hun.

Over 315 cases have been linked to the church, recorded over the weekend, making it one of the biggest clusters in the country, with about 3,400 members of the church directed to self-isolate.

Health Minister, Kim Gang-lip, said that one out of six members of the church tested positive for the virus, adding that the church provided authorities with an "inaccurate" list that made testing and isolating "very difficult."

Jun Kwang-hun, during the weekend, led thousands of right-wing leaning protestors against the president's centre-left government, despite the government's directive to avoid large gatherings.

Authorities have filed complaints against the pastor, as he's accused of working against the efforts of the government of South Korea to check the spread of the virus.
