Death Toll Rises To 20 In South Africa Cholera Outbreak

The cholera outbreak in South Africa has now seen Twenty people dead while an increasing number of patients are requiring treatment.

Foster Mohale, a health department official, said on Thursday that the Jubilee District Hospital had treated 179 patients by Wednesday afternoon, up from 165 the day before. 

This includes 18 patients who were sent to Tshwane's Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital and Steve Biko Academic Hospital.

There have been 78 people hospitalised owing to gastrointestinal infection.

The total number of laboratory-confirmed cholera cases remains at 29.

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal illness characterized by excessive watery diarrhoea and possibly deadly dehydration in its severe form. 

Most cholera infections, on the other hand, are asymptomatic or moderate.

It is caused by the ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium vibrio cholera which can survive in fresh and salt water.
