Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford both secured important wins in their Premier League matches on Wednesday, with the former keeping their European qualification hopes alive, while the latter pushed Southampton further into relegation trouble.
At the Amex Stadium, Brighton beat local rivals Crystal Palace 1-0, earning their first victory against them in eight league meetings. Solly March scored the only goal of the match in the 15th minute, taking advantage of a weak save from Palace's teenage goalkeeper, Joseph Whitworth, who was making his Premier League debut.
The win moved Brighton level on points with sixth-placed Liverpool and they still have a game in hand. It was a memorable night for March, who scored his first goal since October, and Brighton's success this season continues as they prepare to face Grimsby in the FA Cup quarterfinals.
On the other side of the South Coast, Brentford continued their push for a European spot with a 2-0 win against Southampton at St Mary's.
Ivan Toney opened the scoring for the visitors in the 32nd minute with his 16th league goal of the season. Brentford sealed the win with a late strike from Yoane Wissa.
The result was Southampton's third straight defeat and leaves them two points adrift of safety in the relegation battle. Brentford bounced back after losing their unbeaten Premier League run against Everton last weekend.
