Liverpool will be left rueing Mohamed Salah's second-half penalty miss as Philip Billing's goal lifted Bournemouth off the bottom of the Premier League table resulting in a 1-0 defeat to the Anfield outfit.

The win in the first league game of the weekend propelled the Cherries from the last spot to 16th in the table with 24 points, while Liverpool remained in fifth place with 42 points after missing the chance to close the three-point gap to fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

Liverpool started off well, with early shots from Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo, although the latter's effort was ruled out for offside.

Despite a Virgil van Dijk header cleared off the line by Bournemouth defender Jefferson Lerma, Liverpool's performance began to unravel quickly.

Bournemouth's Dango Outtara fired wide in a one-on-one with Alisson, but the Reds failed to take heed of the warning. In the 28th minute, Outtara outpaced Van Dijk and squared the ball for Billing, who scored the game's only goal.

Former Liverpool player Dominic Solanke almost added a second just before halftime, and Billing's penalty appeal was waved away as Bournemouth closed out the half strongly.

Diogo Jota's introduction for Harvey Elliot at halftime quickly made an impact, forcing a save from Neto with a stinging shot four minutes after the break.

Jota then won a penalty for Liverpool, but Salah missed the spot-kick, which seemed to deflate the team. Liverpool was unable to threaten the Bournemouth goal thereafter, with Gakpo's late opportune effort flashing over the bar.

The home fans cheered every tackle and clearance, erupting in joy at the final whistle as Bournemouth secured some breathing space between themselves and the rest of the clubs at the bottom of the table.
