A top Islamist militant, Hisham Ashmawy, formerly a special forces officer, was executed by the Egyptian government on Wednesday over his involvement in attacks across the country, this is according to the country's military.
In a statement released by the army, via its spokesperson, Tamer al-Rifai, the decision to execute Hisham followed a ruling by the military court.

“The execution by hanging was carried out based on a decision by the military court … and after taking all the relevant judicial procedures," he said.
