The Federal Government reportedly prevented over 200 cyberattacks during the February 25 presidential and national assembly elections, according to Prof. Muhammad Abubakar, the managing director of Galaxy Backbone (GBB).

The information was revealed by Abubakar on Tuesday in Abuja at the first session of a two-day Ministerial Training for the board members and management staff of GBB.

Preparing the GBB Team for Successful Management and Leadership in the Fourth Industrial Revolution is the training's subtitle.

A business continuity and cyberspace protection committee, according to him, has been established to safeguard and control online activity while improving the GBB's technical services.

According to Abubakar, the training's objectives were to evaluate the agency's performance and launch new revenue-generating strategies.

“On the election day alone, we were able to block more than 200 attacks and the next day, the attacks geometrically increased to about 1.2 million and all were blocked from our own businesses,” he said.

The programme, according to Prof. Isa Pantami, Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, was designed to assess and rebalance Galaxy Backbone Limited's management and leadership for the best results.

The training's facilitator, Pantami, praised GBB's strategy for developing digital infrastructure while reducing the cost of governance.

“In this training, I will be very much sincere with you to point out some areas where we need significant improvement.

“Training is key when it comes to improving our performance and at the same time training is key when it comes to our self-evaluation, self-judgement, self-assessment.

“We need to think out of the box to discover new areas for government revenue generation.

“We need to be proactive in our thinking, let us not maintain the same process everyday when it comes to revenue generation,” he said.

On February 23, the ministry officially launched a committee to secure the information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure in advance of the 2023 general elections.
