Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, the Governor of Bauchi State, has stated that Nigerians have the right to demand accountability and transparency from the government for sensible and intelligent use of taxpayers' money.
Governor Mohammed told the inhabitants of the state that his government would be tolerant and operate in good faith to uphold the mandate citizens conferred on him to steer their affairs.
This was said in his New Year's address, which was signed by his spokesperson, Mukhtar Mohammed Gidado, yesterday.
“For emphasis also, we consider it the inalienable right of the people to hold the government accountable to the taxpayer. We will also strive to honour the maxim of being our brothers’ keepers and to demonstrate, in word and deed, that ours is a caring government that recognises the voter beyond the election day,” the governor said.
He promised to increase community engagement in his effort to spur socioeconomic growth in the state by 2024. He stated that like all other years, 2023 presented problems in the economic, political, and social areas of human life.
"To that end, we will continue to deepen consultation, stakeholder engagement, and community engagement, which are critical for good governance. This stakeholder ownership will emphasise citizens' rights and obligations.
"As a people, we have remained steadfast in the face of economic downturn, ecological disasters and security challenges. Our trust in God who, through our collective prayers, made it possible for us to weather the storm.
“It is gratifying to note that despite the paucity of funds, we have not relented in our drive towards the provision of infrastructural and social facilities, especially in the areas of road reconstruction, mass housing, urban renewal and education.
"We have also recorded significant strides in reviving agriculture, economic empowerment and youth development,” Governor Mohammed said.
