In a move to safeguard the lives of students following security threats in Abuja, the Nasarawa State government has ordered the immediate closure of all public and private schools in the state.

The state government said the state has received security reports of possible attacks by bandits in communities of the state which necessitated the closure.

This was resolved during the state's Executive Council Meeting on Wednesday in Lafia, the state's capital.

While briefing newsmen, the Commissioner for Education in the state, Fatu Jimaita Sabo said the decision came after the council reviewed security reports that indicated threats around Communities sharing border with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

She added that the decision was necessary to safeguard lives of students and teachers.

She further explained that students who were writing their senior school certificate examinations were exempted from the closure.

Sabo appealed to parents to be calm as the government was only taking precautionary steps.

"We all know that Nasarawa State is safe but this decision was taken as a proactive measure to ensure that our children are safe and continue to remain safe.

"That is for those within the state and those that came from other states to study here.

“We want to also appeal to our principals and heads of respective schools to also ensure that while we are closing these schools, we do it in an orderly manner.
