The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) has warned that job loss at this critical time in the country could spark mass protests.
The National President of the Association, Tommy Etim gave the warning in reaction to the plan of the Federal Government to implement the Oronsaye report.
It will be recalled that the Federal Government, last Monday, approved the implementation of some of the recommendations of the report to reduce the cost of governance twelve years after it was submitted.
Consequently, 29 government agencies will be merged even as eight parastatals will be subsumed into eight other agencies. Four other agencies are to be relocated to four various ministries while one was earmarked for scrapping.
Etim, while speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, applauded the government’s decision to implement the Oronsaye report but asked the government to do so without laying workers off. He warned that laying workers off at this critical time in the country would spark protests.
The ASCSN President said: “We warn that job loss at this critical time of our socioeconomic challenges and food crisis would be a recipe for mass protest and industrial unrest.
“Government should ensure that the Acts establishing these agencies of government are repealed before the implementation to forestall litigation.
“The government must, as a matter of urgency, do away with unnecessary and needless wastage of our scarce resources on frivolities, and deploy such funds to the critical areas of education, health, transportation, food security, national security and pulling people out of poverty.
“However, these should be done with due diligence because those who will be directly affected are mostly civil servants,” Etim said.
