Kano Constitutes Cholera Committee To Check Outbreaks

The Kano State Government says it has constituted a working committee that would round the year to ensure reduction of cholera cases in the state.

The state commissioner of health, Dr Aminu Ibrahim Tsayawa, disclosed this on Tuesday during a press briefing on the Kano's Cholera response in 2022. 

He said 189 cases were recorded in 2022, with 184 fully recovered and five deaths; an improvement over 2021 where 12,116 cases were recorded, with 329 deaths.

There is no active cases at the moment.

Tsayawa who attributed the outbreak of cholera to open defecation and poor personal hygiene, stressed that the media needs to probably sensitise the public on the importance of hand washing, fruit washing and overall hygiene.

He added that though cholera outbreak is a seasonal, the working team will work with stakeholders in the environment sector to eradicate open defection in the state.

The commissioner urged the public to practice frequent hand washing, proper disposal of child faeces, and general hygiene.
