The Kano State Governor's decision on Wednesday to subsidize the Hajj pilgrimage by N500,000 per intending pilgrim has ignited a fiery debate on social media platform X.

The move comes after the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) announced a significant hike in pilgrimage fees.

While some users applauded the Governor's support for religious endeavors, many questioned the allocation of funds.

Cyril Onyekachi commented, "Why should the government waste money on tourists?"

Ali Jita another user said, "Supporting religious endeavors is important, but prioritizing funding for education, healthcare, and infrastructure could benefit more Kano residents."

Maliq argued, "Subsidizing Hajj is wrong. Affordability is a condition for the pilgrimage. The funds would be better utilized for the state's development."

Arewa Chic expressed concern, saying, "This is a misplaced priority. This money could help a family escape poverty rather than those who can afford a 4 million Naira pilgrimage."

Suleiman Tajjudden questioned the use of government funds, suggesting, "The Governor's salary should be reduced, and the money used to increase worker salaries and improve infrastructure."

However, not all reactions were negative, Yaseir commended the gesture while urging the Governor to prioritize renovating schools and upgrading the educational system.
