Kano government says it is taking serious measures to mitigate the impact of the expected 2023 flood in the state.

Nigeria witnessed intense floods that resulted in the deaths of about 603 persons last year.

Over 1.4 million people were displaced, 2,400 persons were injured and about 82,035 houses had been damaged.

The 2022 flood also swept about 332,327 hectares of farmland.

Speaking in Kano on Tuesday, the Executive Secretary, Kano Emergency Management Agency, Dr Aliyu Jili said the state is mindful of the dreadful floods.

He said the government has already started consultations on the best means of reducing the impacts of the flood, as well as safeguarding lives and properties.

For starters, Jili said another meeting is scheduled with stakeholders, adding that there is need for opening water ways.

He told a local radio station that the "water ways are blocked, and the lack of the ways caused some of the floods".

Dr. Jili called upon the people of Kano to help take care of their environments, and open water ways to reduce risk of flood in their areas.

He assured of the government's continued efforts to save lives.
