To hasten the adoption of broadband in the nation, MTN Nigeria Communications PLC on Wednesday in Lagos launched its Home Broadband service.

According to Onyinye Ikenna-Emeka, General Manager of Fixed Broadband at MTN Nigeria, the service was created to help the Federal Government realise its goal of having more than 70% of Americans using broadband by 2025.

She stated that thanks to the service, clients now have access to improved, round-the-clock online ordering options.

Ikenna-Emeka estimates that Nigeria, which has a population of over 200 million, now has a 44.3% internet penetration rate, compared to internet penetration rates of 68, 74, and 48% in South Africa, Egypt, and Kenya, respectively, in other African nations.

“The global technology statistics closely link internet connectivity to sustainable economic growth rates.

“On average, the internet accounts for almost four percent of GDP across large economies,” she said.

According to her, UNICEF predicted that countries with broadband connectivity might experience GDP growth of up to 20%.

Hassan Jaber, Chief Operating Officer of MTN Nigeria, disclosed that the number of Nigerians using MTN's network nationally is currently above 70 million.

“With MTN’s Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) and the latest Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) Home Broadband services, millions of Nigerian households will have access to broadband services.

“The rural areas will also have access to reliable and ultra-fast broadband services to enjoy unlimited data plans.

”It will enable the rural population to connect multiple devices and share data across remote locations for online learning, working from home, streaming, gaming, and smart home solutions, among others.

“At MTN, we believe that everyone deserves the benefits of a modern, connected life; hence our investment in industry-leading connectivity operations,” Jaber said.
