Prof. Suleiman Bala-Mohammed, the vice chancellor of Nasarawa State University in Keffi, has blamed the Friday stampede that left two students dead and fourteen more injured on impatience.
Allnews.ng had reported that the stampede happened when the students and a few local thugs pounced on rice sacks that the state government had supplied to help ease the present financial crisis.
The governor was scheduled to start distributing the consignment on Friday morning, and it had been stored at the university's convocation square.
When the students and thugs overran the guards at the entrance, they flooded into the plaza and began robbing the bags of rice while the governor was being awaited. Many were trampled upon during the stampede, which is how the casualties came about.
Bala-Mohammed responded to the incident by stating that the students lacked the patience necessary for the polite distribution of the rice.
“The gesture of the state government was supposed to be a relief for the students given the hardship across the country, unfortunately, the students were not patient enough to follow the process of accessing the palliative. There was a stampede. So many of the students got injured. Two students lost their lives.
“What happened has hurt our reputation, our image and created a bad name for us. We will not accept that. An investigation will take place and, hopefully, we will have all the facts and information.
“For now, our thoughts and prayers are with our two deceased students and their families, members of the university community as well as those who were injured,” he said.
Bala-Mohammed, who urged fellow students to carry out their academic obligations, keep the peace, and abide by the rules, issued a warning that failure to do so would be an invitation to conflict.
