A stampede on New Year's day has killed 12 people at an Indian religious shrine in the early hours of Saturday.
The disaster happened on the packed route to the Vaishno Devi shrine in Kashmir, India. Report reveals that about a million people visit the religious shrine to pray every year eve.
It was gathered that people fell on each other and many video footage showed how some ran for safety.
The local police chief of the area, Dilbag Singh disclosed to the Press Trust of the Indian agency that; “Police and officials were quick to respond and the order within the crowd was immediately restored."
In 2008, two stampedes occurred in India that left more than 370 dead. In 2011, another happened in Kerala which killed over 100.
