The Federal Government says it will continue with the establishment of a national carrier two years after it was suspended by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration. The controversial national carrier, 'Nigeria Air' has been heavily criticised.
However, regardless of the criticism faced by the administration, the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, said the government will ensure Nigeria Air begins operation before the end of President Buhari's tenure, which ends in three years' time.
Sirika said a framework is being reviewed by the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), after which it will be presented to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for approval.
"We are on it. The transaction adviser has brought in the outline business case. It is being reviewed by the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC). Soon after its completion, it will go to the federal executive council for approved.
"We will not leave this government without having it in place.” NAN quoted Sirika in its report. In 2018, Sirika disclosed that close to NGN100 million was spent on the national carrier initiative which was unveiled at the 2018 Farnborough International Airshow in London.
Sirika made this known while denying the Buhari administration spent $8.8 million on the national carrier. Nigeria Air was meant to compete with the likes of Ethiopia, Egypt, and Kenya, all of which have dominated the African aviation sector.
