The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has reacted to those who have urged it to respect a court decision barring it from going on with its planned nationwide strike.

NLC General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja stated in an interview with Arise News on Tuesday that the union members won't be summoned to appear in court since they are not politicians.

"It is not about going to court; we should have a culture of social engagement. We are not politicians that people would question.

"Go to court, go to court, the objective of the ILO, the United Nations' oldest organisation, which was strengthened during World War II, is to encourage discussion and dialogue among people rather than subject them to abuse, dehumanisation, or threats of going to court.

"We want a roundtable discussion, a dialogue as social partners and not bullies, and that is what we have been pursuing with the government. What we are experiencing now is a resemblance of the SARS situation, where people go around hooded and brutalise citizens and then you are told to go seek redress in court; that is not what our cause is meant for," NLC General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja stated.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and its affiliates were prohibited from initiating any kind of strike or industrial action last Friday by the National Industrial Court.

The two labour unions were given the order to call off its November 14 nationwide walkout.

Following an ex-parte plea to that effect brought before the Court by the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Attorney General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice, Justice Benedict Bakwaph Kanyip, the Court's President, imposed the restraining order.
