More than 100 inmates currently on death row at various correctional centers have appealed to the Kano State Government and the Committee of Prerogative of Mercy for clemency.

According to Musbahu Lawan Kofar Mata, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Kano Correctional Center, the Controller of Correctional Centers, Suleiman Inuwa, submitted a list of inmates who have formally applied for clemency to the committee.

The list of inmates seeking clemency was presented by the Controller to the Chairperson of the Kano State Prerogative of Mercy Committee, Hajiya Azumi Namadi Bebeji, during the committee’s visit to the Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Janguzu, Kano.

The inmates on the list include those on death row, those serving life imprisonment, those serving long sentences, as well as those with serious medical challenges, elderly inmates, and other categories of inmates in the state.

"The Chairperson assured the inmates that the government would look into their conditions based on the attestation of good conduct and industry while in custody to be made by the Correctional Service," said the PRO.
