The Nigeria Police declared on Thursday its commitment to arresting and prosecuting same-sex marriage perpetrators while noting that the union is forbidden and punished under Nigerian law.

Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, issued a statement explaining the police's position.

In an Abuja statement, Adejobi stated that the clarification came in response to a recent social media post in which certain gay people were overtly supporting and identifying themselves with behaviours that were deemed unnatural under Nigerian law.

He said: “The Nigeria Police hereby wishes to enlighten the public on the legal aspects concerning unnatural offences and same-sex marriage within the country.

“In accordance with the Nigerian Criminal Code Act applicable in Southern States, unnatural offences are prohibited under Sections 214 to 217.”

According to Adejobi, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, these provisions particularly criminalise conduct that is deemed unnatural, such as having carnal knowledge of a person or allowing a person to have carnal knowledge of another against the natural order.

He stated that having carnal knowledge of an animal was likewise criminal under the law and that individuals found guilty would face the legal repercussions indicated in the law.

He added: “This is re-echoed by Section 284 of the Nigerian Penal Code applicable in the Northern part of the country.

“Similarly, it is imperative to note that same-sex marriage is strictly prohibited in Nigeria.

“The Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014 criminalises the solemnisation, operation and public display of same-sex marriages.”

Adejobi, as a result, urged understanding and obedience to the law, stating that any violations would be dealt with appropriately.

He stated that the police would stay committed to ensuring peace and order, but asked the public to report any suspicious activity relating to unnatural offences or same-sex marriages.

According to the police spokesperson, providing such information would help officers enforce the law more effectively.

He called for a concerted effort to combat same-sex marriage and urged parents and guardians to take heed and help the police in their battle against inhumane practices.
