Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has issued an edict for children below the age of five to receive free medical services in all public health facilities in Mombasa, Kenya.
The decision is intended to reduce the influx of teenagers seeking treatment at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CPGH), the only hospital authorised by the Governor two weeks ago to provide free care.
"As of today, all public hospitals have been directed to provide free treatment to all children under the age of five to reduce the number of people at CPGH.
"The Coast General should be a referral hospital," Governor Nassir remarked at a press conference.
The Governor stated that in addition to facility renovation funding, the health centres will get additional cash to treat children.
The County Government will begin rolling out medical camps at health institutions across the 30 wards next week to choose 15,000 participants of the Mombasa Care Universal Health Coverage scheme, he added.
"The goal is to provide medical coverage to 15,000 families from all wards, which will be paid for entirely by the County Government.
"We will raise awareness of the program through our Community Health Promoters (CHP) and the media," added the Governor.
Own Source Revenue (OSR) will be used to support the majority of the programs.
Governor Abdulswamad Nassir appointed 2,387 Community Health Promoters (CHPs) in May, who would be paid monthly stipends.
The Governor reaffirmed his commitment to improving access to basic healthcare interventions through the Mombasa Care Programme.
"One of the key ways to achieve this was through regularizing a compensation mechanism for CHPs, as they play an important role in advocating for underserved communities to receive services," Governor Nassir added.
