Former world number one Rafael Nadal is still not fit to return to action ahead of the French Open.

His ongoing hip injury has forced him to pull out from next week's Monte Carlo Masters.

The 36-year-old Spaniard has not appeared on the court since the Australian Open in January after he was defeated in straight sets by American Mackenzie McDonald in the second round.

Taking to Twitter on Tuesday morning to talk about his fitness, Nadal said: "I'm still not ready to compete at the highest level.

"I will not be able to play in one of the most important tournaments of my career, Monte Carlo.

"I am not yet in a position to play with the maximum guarantees and I continue my preparation process, hoping to return soon."

Nadal, who was ruled out for six to eight weeks after an MRI scan following his Melbourne loss, is the French Open defending champion.

With him being a doubt for the tournament which he has won 11 times, a new Roland Garros champion will most likely be crowned in Monaco.
