The Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun have been called upon to replace the damaged barricade under the pedestrian bridge in Panseke area of Abeokuta.

The call was made by some commuters in the area which is located in Abeokuta South local government area of the state.

This is as the commuters also stressed that if not taken care of, it may lead to accidents and loss of lives.

The commuters lamented that the sorry state of the bridge had forced them to abandon it and resort to crossing the road without regard for speeding vehicles.

AllNews.ng observed that the metal barricade used in barricading the median had been damaged while many pedestrians were seen crossing the road while neglecting the pedestrian bridge. While some of the iron barricades had been completely removed, some were almost falling apart.

A commuter who identified himself as Rilwan noted that the barricade, which was damaged by some suspected hoodlums, had since made pedestrians abandon the bridge and resort to crossing the highway.

He feared that if the damaged barricade was not fixed, it could result in road accidents considering the influx of vehicles and human movement on the road.

“We can only appeal to the government to come and fix this barricade. This was constructed with taxpayers’ money and it should not be in this state. The government should not wait until there are accidents and loss of lives before they fix the barricade.

“I was almost knocked down by a speeding vehicle while trying to cross this road some days ago because of the sharp bend.”

Another commuter, Peter Godwin, noted that the pollution around the bridge had forced commuters to resort to crossing the road and disregard the use of the pedestrian bridge.

“Many people have resorted to crossing the road because of the pollution on the bridge. The bridge has been unkempt and passing through it is like putting your health at risk because of the odour that always ooze out from the stench of faeces and urine on the bridge.

“I think the Ogun State Government needs to do more to clean the environment. People no longer care about their safety while crossing the road because both the bridge and the road now pose a threat to them.”

When contacted for a reaction, the Ogun State Commissioner for Works, Ade Akinsanya, did not respond to messages.
