Serbia is in shock after experiencing its second mass shooting in a week, which left at least eight people dead and 14 others injured.

The shooting happened on Friday when a 21-year-old gunman armed with an automatic weapon opened fire from a moving vehicle, spreading the shooting spree across three villages.

Following a manhunt, one suspect was arrested near the city of Kragujevac.

This incident came just two days after a 13-year-old student shot and killed nine people, including eight fellow students, at a school in Belgrade.

The back-to-back mass shootings have left the country in mourning, and a three-day period of national mourning began on Friday.

Around 600 police personnel were deployed to the region of the latest shooting, with members of an elite anti-terrorist unit patrolling the highway.

Authorities sealed the road leading to the affected villages. In the aftermath of the shooting, worried relatives gathered outside the emergency medical centre in Belgrade, where at least eight of the injured were hospitalised.

In the aftermath of the two mass shootings, Serbia's President Aleksandar Vucic proposed stricter gun control measures, including a two-year moratorium on issuing permits for firearms.
