Paris Saint-Germain defender Sergio Ramos has taken to Twitter on Thursday to announce his international retirement.

He also acknowledge receiving a call from Spain's head coach Luis de la Fuente indicating that he would not be a part of his plans moving forward.

The 36-year-old made 180 appearances for La Roja – the all-time record – over the course of a career that stretched over 17 years and saw him win two European Championships and lift the World Cup in 2010.

The former Real Madrid man points out in his statement that he would have liked to end his illustrious time with Spain on a better note, either because of a personal decision or because his performances did not warrant a call-up, rather than a question of age.
