Tinubu launches initiative against social vices in tertiary institutions

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has launched an initiative to fight against social vices, including drug abuse, cybercrime, sexual harassment, and academic dishonesty among others in tertiary institutions.

The president's Senior Special Assistant on Students Engagement, Sunday Asefon made the announcement on Sunday in a statement.

He said the president approved a special committee to commence campaign against the social vices in institutions which hinder academic performance, and students' development.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Asefon explained that the initiative remained important to address the growing concern of social vices across tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

He further stressed that the social vices have become a threat to the overall safety of students and their institutions.

He said: “The formation of the special committee underscores a significant commitment of the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu to safeguard the future of Nigerian students.

“And also the need for a comprehensive and collaborative approach in tackling the menace of social vices in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions."

He explained that members of the committed included various stakeholders, educationists, student activists among others.

The committee tagged "Special Committee for the Eradication of Social Vices in Tertiary Institutions (SESV-TI)" has the former Director General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Nigeria Army University Biu, Major General Suleiman Kazaure (rtd) as the Chairman, and Maxwell Okoye as Secretary. 

Other members of the committee included former Governor of Adamawa State, Bala Ngilari, former FCT Minister of State, (Dr) Ramat Tijjani, the Archbishop of the African Church Abuja, Bishop Peter Ogunmuyiwa among others.
