President Bola Tinubu has nominated Ruby Onwudiwe to replace Orum Kalu Eke, who declined the appointment to the Board of Directors of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, made this announcement during the Wednesday plenary session, reading a letter from President Tinubu seeking confirmation for Onwudiwe.

In the letter, Tinubu cited Section 10, Sub-section 1 of the Central Bank of Nigeria Establishment Act 2007 as the basis for the confirmation request.

Tinubu stated, "I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate, the appointment of Dr. Ruby Onwudiwe as a member of the CBN board of directors. The senate is invited to kindly note that Onwudiwe is a replacement for Mr. Kalu Eke, due to the unavailability of Eke for the position."

He expressed hope that the Senate would consider and confirm Onwudiwe's appointment in its usual expeditious manner.

Previously, the Senate had confirmed four out of the five nominees sent by President Tinubu as members of the CBN board. Those confirmed included Robert Agbede, Ado Yakubu Wanka, Murtala Sabo Sagagi, and Muslimat Olanike Aliyu.

Kalu Eke did not undergo screening before the Committee on Banking, Insurance, and other Financial Institutions. Senator Orji Kalu later revealed on the Senate floor that Eke declined the appointment, citing conflicts with his current consultancy role with the World Bank, among other reasons.
