A Chief Magistrate of the Makurdi Chief Magistrate Court in Benue State, Isaac Ajim, on Monday, sentenced two herders to one-year imprisonment.

The convicts, Sani Adamu and Abdullahi Musa, were jailed for violating the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law of Benue State.

However, Ajim, after listening to the plea of the convicts for leniency, fined them the sum of N500, 000 each, which in default payment would serve a jail term of one year.

In response to the rising of attacks by suspected herdsmen in the state, the Benue State Government passed legislation that banned open grazing on May 22, 2017.
