Two primary school children have drowned in a flooded dam at Mulajje village, Bamunanika sub-county in Luweero District of Uganda where they had reportedly gone fishing.
The two kids have been identified as Primary Three pupils Denis Lukwago, 11, and Jordan Mukisa, 12.
According to Rev. Fr. Gerald Wamala, the parish priest at St. Bonaventure Catholic Parish, one of the Convent Sisters was in charge of the two kids.
“We have lost two children that drowned in the dam.
"The two were under the guardianship of one of the Sisters attached to our Parish. It is a very sad moment,” he said.
Sam Twineamazima, the acting police spokesperson for the Savannah Region, verified the deaths of the two kids whose bodies were found in separate locations in a marsh in the Kyampisi parish of the Bamunanika Sub County.
“The two children that had reportedly gone fishing possibly failed to manoeuvre through the water and drowned.
"This happened at 10.00 AM on Thursday. The bodies have been taken to Luweero Hospital for postmortem,” he said.
Sister Vincentia Nakawuka, the person in charge of the two kids, said that she was away for prayer when the incident occurred.
“It is a sad moment. I picked these children from the community and were under my guardianship. I just received news that they had drowned.
"The community has been fishing at this particular dam.
"I ask God for forgiveness because I have failed this particular test after keeping these children for three years,” she said.
