The National University Commission (NUC) has okayed January 18, 2021, for the resumption of academic activities in Nigerian universities.

Making this announcement in a statement on Friday morning, Chris Maiyak the Deputy Executive Secretary (Administration), stated that further directives would be communicated to the institutions' management.

Mayaki revealed that in line with the directive of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, the Univerisity staff from level 12 and below will remain at home for the period of five weeks.

Further calling on University authorities to strictly adhere to all directives outlines by the Nigerian Center For Disease Control (NCDC), Mayaki warned Universities against violating the full cycle of the University system.

“I am to add that universities on the resumption of academic activities, must under no circumstance violate the full cycle of the semester system, consistent with the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards approved by the NUC, as well as other extant quality assurance standards and guidelines,” the statement by Mayaki read in part.

Recall that University had in March 2019 embarked on an indefinite strike following the refusal of the Federal Government to honour the agreement it entered into with the Union.

The strike which thrived beyond the three months lockdown was called off in December 2020.
