Inmates at the Jos Correctional Center in Plateau State staged a protest on Friday, expressing their discontent over the economic challenges affecting the nation.

The protest reportedly erupted when the inmates were informed of a reduction in the portion sizes of their meals at the correctional center. Refusing to follow instructions from custodial officials, the inmates also declined to partake in breakfast during the demonstration.

According to reports from Daily Trust, the inmates gathered at the center of the prison yard, loudly voicing their grievances. However, custodial officials dispersed them by employing tear gas to compel them back to their rooms.

Confirming the incident, the Comptroller of the Jos Correctional Center, Raphael Ibinuhi, attributed the protest to the high cost of living. He explained, "The problem has to do with the high cost of goods in the market. The contractor in charge of the foods said they are being forced by the price of food items to reduce the size of the plate of foods."

Ibinuhi emphasized that while the food size reduction triggered the protest, he believed it was unnecessary. He pointed out that the issue of food challenges and escalating costs is a national concern being addressed by the federal government. He expressed confidence that any measures taken by the government to tackle the issue would have a positive impact nationwide, including in correctional centers.
